Elegy Island

-Kiyoshi Shigetematsu

NOTES: Elegy Island is a my own version of one of the short stories which featured in the game Lost Odyssey. I felt that it was truly universal in the themes that it tried to convey, even without the need to refer to the main protaganist. I could also not help by see aspects of post-colonialism in the story, in the way the team of archealogists set out to discover the secret of the island. The island, a living and breathing entity, makes them remember past crimes committed on it. Even though we seldom have empirical evidence of massacres, this does not mean they did not take place and that places do not have a memory of their own. I drew Elegy Island at what I believe was a turning point in my life, where I gave in to forces in which I hoped I would find salvation, not too different from the young archealogist in the story.
