NOTES: What began as an experiment turned into a catalyst for many other native American inspired illustrations. The bear in the story encompasses many aspects of the paternal role the earth and nature play in our lives. It is a role too often ignored, and yet such ignorence is ultimately futile. The bear shows the human that he has no teeth, symbolizing his and nature's benevolence. The man is allowed to exploit all of the world and master creatures both small and large. But with time he is subjected to the simple truths of life, its transience but also its continuety. For the bear cub lives on and so does the beauty of other living things.
